The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other protected health information — requiring appropriate safeguards, setting limits on how information may be used or disclosed without your authorization, and giving you rights over your health information, including the right to examine and obtain a copy of your records, direct that an electronic copy be sent to a third party, and request corrections.
